Mike Arteaga's January 2007 Newsletter
Happy New Year! Make it a great year!!
MIKE ARTEAGA’S HEALTH AND FITNESS CENTER WILL BE OPEN NEW YEAR’S DAY 9:00 AM – 1:00PM
Thank you for voting Mike Arteaga’s the best Health and Fitness Center in the Hudson Valley again this year in the Hudson Valley Magazine.
WHY ARE THE NEW “BE SMART” SIGNS IN OUR PARKING LOTS? We have had a couple of unfortunate incidents recently where valuables were left on the seat of a car and the car windows were smashed to steal the items. Unfortunately the police tell us these incidents are happening in parking lots all over the Poughkeepsie area. They tell us these are crimes of opportunity and rarely happen if things aren’t visible through the windows. We feel awful when these things happen and feel that we should help remind everyone to put things out of sight and to report anyone hanging around our lots! Thanks for your cooperation !! Mike Arteaga
THE WHY AND HOW OF CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE! Cardiovascular exercise (aerobic exercise) is the exact opposite of strengthening exercise! Although each type of exercise has some benefit on the performance of the other, each has very different purposes and results. Despite what we are told on television and in the “health” magazines, there are NO exercises that accomplish both at the same time! What is Cardiovascular exercise? Cardiovascular is a continuous type of exercise that you can perform for a longer period of time as you become more fit. In contrast, strengthening exercise is a very short duration, with each exercise reaching a point where you are unable to continue within 60 to 90 seconds! The intensity of cardiovascular exercise is much lower than strengthening exercise. For example, long distance running can be performed for an extended period of time because it has a lower exercise intensity level than the 100 yard dash! The 100 yard dash is a very high intensity exercise and can only be performed for a very short period. Why is strengthening exercise so different from cardiovascular exercise? Strengthening exercise is like the 100 yard dash. It demands so much energy so quickly, that the body’s ability to supply energy is exceeded, and the stored sources of energy are quickly depleted. The energy demands of cardiovascular are lower and energy required can be met or exceeded by the body as you exercise. The major limiting factor in the body’s energy supply system is oxygen supply; the body’s ability to absorb oxygen. Cardiovascular exercise improves the body’s ability to absorb and transport it throughout the body. Strengthening exercise increases muscle, bone and connective tissue strength and this reinforces the joints. Dr Henry Lodge, author of the best seller “Younger Next Year”, says cardiovascular exercise keeps us alive, and strengthening exercise makes it worth living”! What are the benefits of cardiovascular exercise? Cardiovascular exercise primarily improves the health and efficiency of our heart, lungs and circulatory system. This results in an immense list of health benefits including; reduced blood pressure, reduced chance of heart attack (even if there is a family history of heart disease), reduced risk of stroke, improved cholesterol levels, reduced incidence of cancer, reduced incidence of depression, reduced incidence of premature death from all causes and many, many more! If we do a lot of CV exercise, doesn’t it increase our leg strength? Cardiovascular exercise doesn’t increase muscle strength beyond minor changes that occur when a totally sedentary person begins to exercise. Many people are surprised to know that even world class marathon runners generally have very weak legs, unless they have been doing strengthening exercise. Even marathon runners, who don’t strength train, will lose muscle each year as they age, unless they incorporate strengthening exercises on a regular basis. A running and walking program will not appreciably reduce the chance of developing osteoarthritis in our knee joints (or other joints), but leg extension and leg curl strengthening exercises will! What does cardiovascular exercise do to our body? Just like the skeletal muscles, when the body’s cardiovascular system is stressed, this system will adapt and become more efficient between exercise sessions. This improvement happens so that it can deliver more oxygen to the cells next time. Many changes take place to help increase oxygen delivery. The following are some of the changes. 1. The heart is a muscle and gets bigger and stronger as a result of cardiovascular exercise. Due to the increased strength and increased heart chamber size, the heart dramatically increases the quantity of blood it can pump!2. The volume of the lungs is increased, creating greater surface for gas exchange, resulting in more oxygen being absorbed with each breath.3. The resting pulse rate decreases because the heart pumps more blood with each stroke.4. The blood vessels throughout the body increase in size. The wider they become the less likely they are to be affected by blockages and the less likely we are to develop high blood pressure.5. All blood vessels have the ability to widen and shrink (dilate) in response to the demands put on the body. This ability to dilate increases.6. The number of capillaries increases.7. As a result of improvements to the blood vessel system, the blood can be delivered more easily, which lowers the blood pressure.8. Blood volume increases along with an increase in the percentage of the red blood cells, which carry the oxygen throughout the body!9. Cardiovascular exercise increases the amount of oxygen delivered to the body (VO2 max). The above list includes just a few of the known changes that contribute to increased work capacity. Leading researchers know that there are certainly many more changes yet to be discovered!
DON’T FORGET TO WORK ANTAGONISTIC MUSCLES TO KEEP YOU JOINTS HEALTHY! Antagonistic muscles are the opposing muscles on the opposite sides of the joints. If one group is neglected, joint stability is actually undermined and the possibility of injury can actually increase! To keep the joints healthy and reduce the chance of injury, make sure that you strengthen the muscles on both sides of each joint! For example, if you work your quadriceps, the front of your legs, you should work the hamstrings on the back of your legs.Mike Arteaga MIKE ARTEAGA’S EAGLE OF THE MONTH FOR JANUARY Congratulations to Becky Imperati, Eagle of the Month for January 2007! Becky joined the team in September 2005 as a fitness trainer. She can always be found eagerly helping her members in the very early morning hours as well as in the afternoon hours. Thank you Becky for your enthusiasm, dedication and high energy! CELL PHONE COURTESY! Cell phones are a necessity for so many nowadays! For example, they make it possible for local medical staff, who are on call, to exercise without being unreachable. When using your phone, please be considerate of others and if you have a long call or you tend to speak loudly into your phone, please step into the hall to take the call. One member asked, “how would they like it if I was next to them on a treadmill and started to read out loud”? Thanks for your consideration!!
BODY TRAINING SYSTEMS GROUP GROOVE CLASSES are here and they are terrific! What is Group Groove? If you can move, you can Groove! Group Groove is a hugely popular dance exercise program that is a fusion of club, urban, and Latin dance styles with motivating chart topping hits and retro classic tunes! It’s for anyone of any age who wants to really have fun and have a great cardio workout.
TIPS TO HELP PRESERVE OUR HEALTH AND EXERCISE FOR A LIFETIME!Remember: When you exercise, you are fighting a thousand diseases at once, unlike drugs that may help prevent one disease and cause other problems.• Read Younger Next Year! It’s the most important thing you can do to preserve your health! It makes a great holiday gift.• Keep in mind “it’s not about the weight”. Weight loss has nothing to do with fitness!! A recent study confirmed this showing that obese men who were moderately fit had FIVE TIMES LOWER PREMATURE DEATH RATE than thin men who didn’t exercise!!• Make sure not to fall into the trap of just doing your favorite strengthening exercises! Our favorites are the ones we are strongest in and thus the ones we need the least! • The slower you lift a weight, the more improvement you will see because you reduce momentum that actually takes the work of part of the muscle. • Make sure to do cardiovascular and strengthening exercises each week.
MIKE ARTEAGA’S CANCER WELLFIT PROGRAM Have you heard of our Cancer Wellfit Program? It’s a completely free three month membership for cancer patients who are within one year of treatment. Research shows that when a cancer patient’s quality of life is improved by exercising regularly, even at a low level, they are better able to tolerate their medications, participate more fully in daily activities and improve their ability to enjoy life. If you know someone who could benefit from the program, please speak to a coordinator.
WHAT’S NEW?In both Ulster and Poughkeepsie centers:• Starting January 1, 2007, Child Care will open at 8:30 AM on Sundays.• The New BTS Group Groove class is here! This fantastic new dance exercise class is making a great hit! Give it a try! You’ll love it!• Group Ride instructor training was fantastic. New classes will be added to the February Group Exercise Schedule. • BTS Centergy instructor training class will be held January 5, 6,and 7th in the Highland club. BTS Centergy is a very popular pilates/yoga type class and will be launched in early March!• New Arthritis water classes, sanctioned by the Arthritis Foundation, are now being offered. In the Poughkeepsie center:• The MedX area has been rearranged in preparation for the exciting new construction that will be started early next year.• The ladies’ locker room 2 has been completely redecorated by Designer Rudy Fabiano, one of the country’s leading club designers. • The basketball gym has been completely renovated with new paint and new padding on the walls. The floor has also been stripped down to bare wood and completely refinished! In the Highland center:• Additional MedX machines have been added to the optional equipment area, including a leg extension machine, a leg curl machine, a pullover machine and a curl machine!• The lower hall and stairway have been repainted and decorative wall panels have been added.
WANT A RACQUETBALL GAME?A new racquetball “find a game” bulletin board has been put up on the lowest level in the Poughkeepsie Center near the entrance to court #3, to help those who would like to find someone new to play.
WE ARE A FREE WIRELESS INTERNET ZONE. FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, WE HAVE MEMBER WEB ACCESS COMPUTERS AVAILABLE IN BOTH CENTERS. THEY ARE LOCATED IN THE FRONT LOBBIES.

DO YOU KNOW THAT WE HAVE THE MOST ADVANCED REHABILITATION EQUIPMENT IN THE WORLD?
The MedX is unquestionably the best equipment for muscle strengthening, but the MedX and the other equipment that we have in the clubs, are the best physical rehabilitation equipment in the world!
The Nautilus forearm machine, for example, is the most advanced machine available for the rehabilitation of tennis elbow, pitcher's elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis of the hands and other wrist and hand problems!
The Hammer fibia flexion machine is the best rehab machine for chronic ankle turns, shin splints, drop foot and many other ankle and lower leg problems.
The MedX leg extension and leg curl machines are simply the best machines available for all types of knee problems including rehabilitation for ACL surgery, cartilage or ligament repair, osteoarthritis and a myriad of other knee problems.
The neck machine is excellent for preventing and reversing osteoporosis of the upper spine and neck, as well as reducing or eliminating neck and shoulder pain resulting from herniated discs in the neck, whiplash accidents and other causes .
The MedX lateral raise machine, combined with the MedX pullover and MedX torso arm machines are excellent for reducing or eliminating shoulder pain from shoulder impingement and other causes.
The Rotary shoulder machine (Poughkeepsie club) is the best machine for re-strengthening the often injured or torn rotator cuff muscles that support the shoulder joint and rotate the upper arm.
The MedX medical lumbar machines in our Healthy Back and Neck Program are the only machines in the world that isolate and strengthen the muscles directly on the spine. All other "back and neck machines and exercises" involve other muscle groups, allowing other muscles than the back muscles to do the work. Strengthening these muscles that directly support the spine is essential for reducing the pain and disability from a wide variety of spine and neck problems.
The MedX exercise lumbar machine is a simplified version of the MedX medical lumbar machine and although not as effective as the medical lumbar machine in isolating the spinal muscles, it can be very effective for strengthening these muscles in most people.
The MedX rotary torso machine is the most effective machine for strengthening the muscles that rotate and support the spine. These muscles are part of the spinal erector muscle group that lend support to the spine and when strengthened, help in the reduction or elimination of back pain.
The MedX hip abductor and adductor machines are the best in the world for strengthening the muscles around the hip joint that move the femur away from the body or pull the femur in towards the body.
How does strengthening the muscles help to reduce the pain?
"How can these machines help my wrist? It really hurts just to move it. How will doing an exercise for my wrist help reduce the pain?" It is now an accepted fact that the body generally heals better with movement and that the old approach of resting and doing nothing causes everything to deteriorate and weaken. Although rest is sometimes necessary, in most cases this slows the healing process. Pain free movement of the affected area promotes growth and healing!
When the body is supported properly, there will usually be some movements, (often starting with a very limited motion) that can be done without pain! Begin with these movements, performing the exercises in this limited range with the goal of slowly increasing the strength in the immediate area. As strength increases, healing is promoted in the surrounding area. The chemical signals sent to the brain that tell the body to strengthen the muscles, tendon and connective tissue in the area being worked, also "spills over" into the surrounding tissue even when this tissue isn't directly involved in the exercise. This strengthens and promotes healing in these areas!
These are the best tools available for rehabilitation, but as I remind everyone, they can also cause injury if they aren't used correctly. If, for example, someone begins the forearm machine too enthusiastically, they can easily cause tennis elbow tendonitis! After getting the OK to begin exercise, make sure you have a trainer set you up correctly on whatever machine you would like to use. They will help you establish a pain free range of motion and begin the exercise at a very easy level! Mike Arteaga

TIPS TO HELP PRESERVE OUR HEALTH AND EXERCISE FOR A LIFETIME!Remember: When you exercise, you are fighting a thousand diseases at once, unlike drugs that may help prevent one disease and cause other problems.?
  • Read Younger Next Year! It's the most important thing you can do to preserve your health!? Develop the habit of always leaving food on your plate! I know this runs counter to most of our upbringing, but generally, our portion sizes are way too large and this really helps us control our intake of calories!?
  • Schedule a refresher appointment in the fitness center, and get a thorough review of your program, to make sure you are getting the most out of it!
  • When doing the MedX circuits, push yourself during at least one of your workouts each week to a point where you can only do a partial last repetition! Remember, it is the last repetition that produces the results.
  • Make sure to do cardiovascular and strengthening exercises each week.

A CONVERSATION WITH DR. HARRY LODGE
It was time for my physical again, so I thought I would try something different and schedule it with Dr. Harry Lodge (co-author of Younger Next Year) in Manhattan, where he oversees a 23 doctor practice on Madison Avenue. Dr. Lodge is consistently listed on “the Best Doctors in NY and America.” A friend, who knows him well, told me "he’s brilliant, he loves reading all the latest research and never forgets a word of it.” Why not go to some one who is current on the latest health research information and meet the author of this wonderful book?
The week before my appointment, I went to the city for my blood work and completed 15 pages of questions on my health habits and family history. Upon meeting Dr. Lodge in the waiting room, he told me to call him Harry. He reviewed my questionnaire, asked me about my exercise habits and emphasized the importance of doing both cardiovascular exercise and strengthening exercise, even though he knew he was “preaching to the choir.” After the physical exam, he informed me that all my test results were good but recommended a resting heart echocardiogram and an artery scan to check for any accumulated plaque. Cholesterol levels in the blood, Harry said, do not accurately reflect whether an individual has accumulated plaque levels in the arteries and an arterial scan is a better measure in helping to determine who should be taking statins.
He then took time to answer questions and talk. The importance of exercise, he said, is undervalued by the medical profession and the public because there is no formal training in this area at medical schools and that much of the research is invalid because it is diluted by misinformation. Most health research is conducted with self-reporting of exercise participation, and this has been proven to be highly invalid. “This is why the research from the Cooper Clinic in Texas is so valuable because they test for fitness levels and don’t use questionnaires in their research,” Harry added. (We have been quoting the Cooper Clinic research in our articles for years).
He spoke of a study using self-reporting that showed no correlation between exercise and health, but when the same group was tested for exercise participation, there was an absolute one to one correlation between exercise and health benefits! This study clearly showed that whether intentionally or unintentionally, many people were not actually exercising at all or exaggerated how much they did exercise. Since most research is based on self-reporting, the importance of exercise is dramatically underestimated.
According to Dr. Lodge, the most important factors in determining health and longevity are mental attitude and exercise. In fact, he said that a regular exerciser, who is overweight and smokes, is more likely to be healthier and live longer than a thin, sedentary, non-smoker! That’s how important exercise is for our health!
Harry and his co-author, Chris Crowley, are clearly committed to helping more people adjust their lifestyles to add regular exercise before their health is at risk. Harry is optimistic that this can be done! He said, “Look what has happened to smoking; in the last 10 years it has changed so that most people don’t smoke; it’s considered really stupid to smoke!”
He and Chris are now very interested in the psychology of exercise adherence. He told me he took his first group step class at his club in NYC the day before, and despite saying he has no rhythm, he found the class to be a lot of fun and a good workout. He believes that there is something in the group exercise classes that makes it more fun to do! This is beneficial in helping people stick with exercise.
I found Harry to be a brilliant and charming individual, who has so much to contribute to the health of America. If you haven’t read his book “Younger Next Year” please do so. It is a must read if you are serious about preserving your health, and in my opinion, one of the top five books anyone should read in their lifetime!

GOOD NEWS! OUR BODIES DON’T WEAR OUT!
The notion that our bodies only have so many miles in them, and inevitably wear out as we age, is simply wrong.
Scientists used to think, for example, that our knees had a certain number of miles and like the suspension in a car, if we lived long enough, our knees would wear out. They believed that the more exercise performed, the faster the knees would wear out! A lot of the research was focused on how to build replacement parts, as has been done with knee and hip replacements.
We now know this concept is wrong! When some long term exercisers began showing signs of healthier than normal cartilage in their knees, this old theory came into doubt. Knee cartilage, for example, depends on regular exercise to stay healthy. Knee cartilage has a very poor blood supply and relies on the synovial fluid around it to get most of its nutrients. Just as the squeezing and releasing action of our hand pushes water in and out of a sponge when we rinse it in a bucket of water, the squeezing and releasing action of the cartilage as we walk or jog feeds our cartilage!
We now also know that our bodies literally rebuild all our body parts on a regular basis! According to Gerontologist and best selling author of Younger Next Year, Dr. Henry Lodge: “The muscle cells in your thigh are completely replaced one at a time, day and night, about every four months; brand-new muscles, three times a year. The solid leg you’ve stood on so securely since childhood is mostly new since last summer. Your blood cells are replaced every three months, your platelets every ten days, and your bones every couple of years. Your taste buds are replaced every day. This is not a passive process. You don’t wait for a part to wear out or break. You destroy it at the end of its planned life span and replace it with a new one.”
Then why do we deteriorate as we age? We know that most of the deterioration is due to our lifestyle. The vast majority of our population is falsely convinced that we should do less and “slow down” as we age! This is the exact opposite of what we should be doing; exercise stimulates growth and healing, and inactivity stimulates deterioration!! As Dr. Walter Bortz, former President of the American Geriatric Society says “it’s nice to exercise when you are 20 or 30, but you damn well better be exercising when you are over 50; it’s critical for good health!”
We obviously know that some deterioration happens as a result of the aging process, but it is not clear how much is actually attributable to getting older. It is clear to researchers in the field that age has a lot less to do with our deterioration then was previously believed. Dr. Bortz said “we don’t know how to define the aging process because all the things that we previously believed were part of aging. We now know are the direct result of inactivity as we age!” Dr. Lodge has stated that our genes only play a 20% role in what happens to us and that 70% of all disease is lifestyle related!
It is clear from the research that most of what happens to us as we age is within our control and the regular exercise that stimulates growth and healing is the most critical component for preventing disease and physical deterioration at any age!
Let’s be part of the growing number who refuse to sit down and age the old fashioned way, but are fighting it every day to see how active, healthy and enjoyable our lives can be. Do it for yourself and your family. The greatest gift you can give your kids is a healthy maturity!
Don’t miss reading the most important book for preserving everyone’s health, Younger Next Year by Chris Crowley and Dr. Henry Lodge.

MORE TEENS ARE EXERCISING! ISN'T THIS GREAT?
It’s great to see growing numbers of teens working out regularly. Unfortunately the number of teenage athletic and exercise injuries is also increasing dramatically! Unfortunately, most teens learn about exercise from their schoolmates, and those who often have no training in exercise science. As a result, a lot of misinformation has been handed down from generation to generation. Hopefully the following scientifically based information will be helpful to parents and teens!
One of the most frequent fallacies that is at the heart of this misinformation is the assumption that if a person is muscular, athletic in appearance or a successful athlete, they must know what they are doing! The fact is that most of our appearance and athletic ability comes from our genes, not our workouts, and as one researcher put it, “many champion athletes are successful despite their workouts, not because of them!”
Strengthening exercise (weight training) with barbells or machines is beneficial for teens, as well as adults, as long as it is performed properly; yet it can be the source of injury and the cause of osteoarthritis and other long term problems if done incorrectly.
Some of the most common mistakes include: Lifting weights every day. The muscles only grow during the time off! If you lift every day, you will slow your program. This frequently causes overuse injuries because of insufficient recovery time.
Throwing the weights rather than lifting them slowly! Lifting rapidly may look dramatic, but it actually reduces the load on the muscle while increasing the load on tendons and joints by up to 500%! Lifting slowly puts more load on the muscle and brings about faster muscle growth; plus, it dramatically reduces the chance of injury.
Not working antagonistic muscles: Doing your favorite exercises without working the opposing muscles. Bench presses and arm curls are good examples of exercises that are often overdone without the corresponding exercise for their opposite muscles. These build disproportionate strength that destabilizes the joints, eventually causing shoulder problems.
Using protein supplements! The body requires slightly more protein when a strengthening program is begun. A peanut butter sandwich, for example, can easily fill the need. Since there is no FDA control over supplements, a number of research studies have indicated that many of these very expensive “muscle building protein supplements” actually contain a fraction of the protein they claim to have!
Not strengthening the legs because “I run” or “I don’t like doing legs”: The leg muscles are the most important skeletal muscles because they protect our knees and hips and provide our mobility. They should be a top priority! Running increases leg endurance; it doesn’t strengthen the legs.
Skipping cardiovascular exercise! The most important muscle in our body is our heart, and the heart requires cardiovascular exercise to maintain its health! During 33 years of helping people exercise and observing the results, I have seen many weight lifters who looked great at the time their heart problems became apparent. Always include cardiovascular exercise in every exercise routine!
We have some of the best trainers in the country; please use them to help establish a scientifically based exercise program for your family members. Exercise should make you healthier, not cause injury or contribute to long term deterioration. If you or someone you know are having problems, let us help you adjust your program to avoid injury.

TIPS TO HELP EXERCISE FOR A LIFETIME!
Remember: When you exercise, you are fighting a thousand diseases at once, unlike drugs that may help prevent one disease and cause other problems.
Sorry to be redundant, but read Younger Next Year!
Stop worrying about weight loss, and increase your likelihood of success! A friend who has failed at regular exercise many times over the last 25 years, but now has been exercising consistently for the last year (and is down 40 pounds) told me, “Mike, I was always exercising to lose weight, and now I have been focused on my health. I don’t even watch my weight and I’m successful!
Studies have shown that weight loss is one of the least successful reasons to exercise. Focus on health, being around to enjoy your kids etc., and you will be much more likely to succeed at regular exercise!
Work is not exercise! The only blue collar workers who reach retirement in good health are those who have participated in a regular exercise program!

SEPTEMBER 2006 NEWSLETTER
Mike Arteaga’s will be closed at 1:00 PM on Sunday, September 10th for our annual team picnic.
THE ARTHRITIS CURE!
According to Dr. Henry Lodge the highly respected author of Younger Next Year, “when I see a patient who has been recommended for knee replacement (due to advanced osteoarthritis), I send them to do strengthening exercises and 60 % of the time we don’t see them again!” Osteoarthritis is also referred to as the “everybody disease” because as we mature almost everyone has at least some traces of it. This doesn’t mean it has to be painful. It used to be believed that activity caused or contributed to the deterioration of the cartilage that is osteoarthritis. We now know that it’s just the opposite, regular exercise is necessary for healthy cartilage, and the inactivity is a major part of the cause.
Amazingly, as Dr. Lodge states, arthritis pain often diminishes as the muscles around the affected joint are strengthened. Strengthening exercise works better than any of the expensive medications for arthritis pain, and there are none of the potentially awful side effects that all the various arthritis medications warn about on their labels!
Dr. Jason Theodosakis wrote a book called The Arthritis Cure about 15 years ago in which he stated that strengthening exercise, along with glucosamine sulfate supplements, could eliminate arthritis knee pain. He was loudly, widely criticized for his “cure”, but time has proven he was right! When the muscles around the joint are strengthened, the joint is pulled snuggly together as it is designed to be. This often alleviates or eliminates the pain even when there is no visible improvement in the cartilage!
According to Dr. James Fries, Associate Director of the Stanford Arthritis Center, “body systems, including the joints, work better when they are used than when they are not used”. Glucosamine sulfate supplements are also recommended for helping to reduce osteoarthritis pain when taken in conjunction with a strengthening program. According to Dr. Arthur Grayzel, consultant to the Arthritis Foundation, “a strengthening program is now totally established as part of the rehabilitation of a person with arthritis. Regardless of age, the results demonstrate that a person is never too old to become stronger”. It’s simple (and drug free) if you want to eliminate the pain of arthritis, strengthen the muscles on all sides of the affected joint and add glucosomine sulfate supplements daily. We have an unusually broad array of strengthening machines for these purposes!
Glucosamine is not a drug! It is one of the molecules the body uses for the construction of cartilage. It has no side effects, but you should check with your doctor if you are on any medications. Mike Arteaga
TANNING: IS IT SAFE?
Why is there a frightening spike in the skin cancer rates among the young? Easy access to insta-tans, doctors say, may be contributing to this trend! According to a recent article in Time Magazine, the incidence of melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer has doubled since 1975 among women 15 to 29. “Skin cancer used to be something old people got”, said Dr. James Spencer, a clinical professor of Dermatology at New York City’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine!
We all know that the sun is a major source of skin cancer, but is indoor tanning any safer? No! UV lamps come with all the health risks of natural sunlight, according to the American Academy of Dermatology! Fifteen years ago we decided to remove our sun tanning beds when the first proof of skin cancer caused by tanning beds turned up! At Mike Arteaga’s we take special care to make sure everything we bring to our valued members is scientifically based and proven safe. We assure you we will continue to do this!

BRING YOUR FRIENDS IN FOR FREE - MEMBER APPRECIATION DAYS IN AUGUST August 7th and 8th – Member Appreciation Days If you weren’t able to take advantage of our Member Appreciation Days in July, here’s your chance to bring any and all your friends and family to the club to try out whatever they want! There are no guest fees, Child Care will be free and there will be tons of fun giveaways all day. BEST SELLING AUTHOR, CHRIS CROWLEY, WAS HERE! We were very fortunate to have Chris Crowley, co-author of “Younger Next Year”, join us on Monday July 20! He was curious about the MedX equipment, which he had never had an opportunity to use before. I obliged, and we began his visit by putting him through a circuit workout. He was so impressed that he was trying to figure out if he could make a weekly drive to Poughkeepsie to do it regularly. Later he gave a 50-minute presentation on the tremendous importance of exercise for health and disease avoidance! He spoke to a packed conference room, then answered questions and signed books. “Younger Next Year” is a fantastic book covering the remarkable new research on health and slowing the aging process. This is a must read that will change everyone’s attitude about health and aging! If you have a friend or family member who can’t find the time to exercise or refuses to do it, this is the gift for them. Don’t miss reading it! THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK YOU CAN READ TO PRESERVE YOUR HEALTH!Mike Arteaga
WHAT IS THE POINT? Why are strengthening exercises so important and what is the point? When we work our muscles and tire them in a short period of time using appropriate resistance, it has a completely different effect on the body than if we tire our muscles over an extended period. The most obvious example is the contrast between an Olympic sprinter’s leg muscles and the legs of an Olympic marathon runner. Some of this difference is genetic but much is attributable to the way they train. The sprinter works very hard (to exhaustion) over a short period of time (strengthening exercise) and the marathon runner works at a lower intensity for extended periods (cardiovascular exercise). The sprinter generally has very strong legs while the marathon runner(even world class runners) generally have very weak legs! For good health we need to include each kind of exercise. As Dr. Lodge says in “Younger Next Year” cardiovascular exercise keeps us alive (by improving our circulatory system, heart and lungs) and strengthening exercise makes it worth living! Strengthening exercise stops muscle loss, builds bones, prevents joint problems and much more! Ideally, strengthening exercises should be performed until the muscle being worked is unable to move the weight. This should be done within a short period of time; ideally 60 to 90 seconds. It is about challenging your muscles. Lifting a weight that can be easily moved for 10 repetitions is a waste of time. The last repetition is literally the productive one! The point is to reach exhaustion or close to it. Ideally you are not supposed to complete the last repetition! Sometimes people will say “but I couldn’t do another one”! This is the point and how it should be! They should try a half a repetition or whatever they can do; then stop! Occasionally people will jerk the last one to complete it. This defeats the whole point and is very dangerous. Jerking it up doesn’t work the muscle; in fact, it takes the pressure off the muscle just as you are getting to the most important repetition! The last ones should be the slowest! Some people believe that strengthening exercise is dangerous. The truth is, it is very safe for anyone, any age, as long as the weights are moved slowly and deliberately. The muscles aren’t strong enough to cause injury unless the weight is jerked or moved rapidly! Some believe that strengthening exercises are only for the young. The truth is, strengthening exercise is more important the older we get. It is the key to slowing the aging process! Remember; the number one predictor of entering a nursing home is weak legs. Strengthening exercise will guarantee you will never have weak leg muscles! Mike Arteaga
EAGLE FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST Congratulations Jennifer Spoleti! Jenn has been with All Sport for 3 years. Her great smile and friendly attitude have made her a favorite among our members. Jenn is currently studying to be a teacher while working full time at an area middle school. And if all that doesn’t keep her busy, planning her upcoming wedding certainly will! Thank you Jenn for all you bring to our team!
MEDX HEALTHY BACK AND NECK PROGRAM Eighty percent of adult Americans suffer from low back pain. It is the leading cause of work disability for people 45 years and under. After 14 years of continued research, the MedX Lumbar and the MedX Cervical machines were proven and perfected by an independent study at the University of Florida. The MedX program will restore function in 85% of all cases of chronic low back pain in as little as 12 weeks. Research done on the MedX Cervical Machine shows similar results. How does it work? Unlike conventional back testing and strengthening devices, the sophisticated design of the MedX Lumbar Machine and the MedX Cervical Machine allow total isolation of the muscles in the lumbar and cervical spine area. If the pelvis is free to move, the measured strength level will be the result of forces produced by the hip and thighs, as well as the back muscles. If the shoulders and back are free to move, the measured strength level will be the result of the shoulder and back as well as the cervical neck muscles. In the MedX Lumbar Machine and the MedX Cervical Machine, testing the strength of the muscles extending the lumbar and cervical spine provide total isolation of this muscle group and the testing will be accurate. The effective amount of therapeutic exercise can be determined by measuring functional ability (strength, true range of motion and muscular endurance) accurately. Once the right amount of exercise is determined, the MedX machines are then used to perform dynamic exercise through a controlled range of motion. MedX machines allow testing and recording of results through its fully computerized integrated system. For the first time the patient is able to address the real cause of back pain and strengthen the deficient areas. Amazing Results: 1. MedX provides relief from more than 85% of all low back problems. 2. Many patients achieve 100% gain in strength in as little as 12 weeks. 3. Improvement in functional ability. 4. The best prevention of back pain and re-injury. 5. Computer generated data provides reliable testing. For more information, please call us at 452-5050 or stop by to talk to one of our technicians in person.

ARE YOU WORKING YOUR ANTAGONISTIC MUSCLES? Do you know what antagonistic muscles are? Antagonistic muscles are opposing muscles or the muscles on opposite sides of any joint. Unless both sets of muscles are strengthened you can actually hurt the joint and destabilize it rather than help it. For example: when strengthening the knee joint the “quads” on the front of the thigh and their antagonist, the hamstring muscle group and the calf muscle on the back of the thigh, must also be worked. One of the most important benefits of maintaining your muscle strength is strong healthy joints with a reduced chance of injury and osteoarthritis pain. This will not happen unless antagonistic muscles are strengthened! When the focus is on one muscle group on one side of a joint, that joint will be pulled off center. Eventually this will cause cartilage deterioration and arthritis rather than preventing it! An example is the common tendency to work on the chest muscles with chest presses and neglect the antagonistic muscles; the lats, trapezius and the rear deltoid. To maintain joint health make sure to always work antagonistic muscles! This is another reason to use the MedX circuit! The MedX provides the most advanced muscle strengthening exercise known today and our circuits are designed to work all antagonistic muscle groups so you don’t have to worry about it. Mike Arteaga

WHY IS CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE SO IMPORTANT! As Dr Henry Lodge says in his best selling book “Younger Next Year”, “cardio exercise keeps us alive and strengthening exercise makes it worth living!” Cardiovascular exercise requires the body to increase the blood flow through the body and this has a multitude of fantastic effects on our body. One of the major changes from regular cardio exercise is an increase in the size and number of blood vessels in the body! When the blood vessels are larger the plaque that accumulates in them will have a harder time creating problems. Obviously a larger “pipe” is harder to clog than a smaller one. In addition the vessels that act as a secondary blood supply or “backup” system, in case of a blockage, are larger and more developed reducing the chances of serious problems when a blockage does occur! So make time for regular cardiovascular exercise, it’s the most important thing you can do to preserve your health! Mike Arteaga
IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME, GUARANTEED! TIPS TO HELP EXERCISE FOR A LIFETIME! Remember: when you exercise, you are fighting a thousand diseases at once, unlike drugs that may help prevent one disease and cause other problems.? When you have an injury work with a trainer to design an exercise routine to work around the injury! Exercise has been shown to promote healing and avoiding all exercise when you are recovering is counter productive! ? We all have “strong” days and “weak” days as part of our natural bio-rhythms. Go with the flow, don’t fight them! Go a little easier on your weak days and a little harder on your “strong” days!? If we aren’t exercising we are deteriorating. Nothing else is possible! We are always either getting better or getting worse!? A recent study showed that exercise helped reduce the healing time from a cut by 30%.Good Health! Mike Arteaga WHAT’S NEW?? WOW! The new GROUP STEP classes are here!!? The new Nautilus Nitro Abdominal machine is in on the fitness floor in Poughkeepsie!? The new MedX Dip Machine is in on the fitness floor in Highland!? Renovation of the basketball gym in Poughkeepsie will begin the week of July 17th. In case you are wondering what the scaffolding on the north side of the Poughkeepsie club is there for they are almost finished sealing the masonry joints and repainting them!
WANT A RACQUETBALL GAME?A new racquetball “find a game” bulletin board has been put up on the lowest level, in the Poughkeepsie Center near the entrance to court #3, to help those who would like to find someone new to play. IMPROVE YOUR G0LF GAME – GUARANTEED!
According to Buddy Alexander, the head men’s golf coach at the University of Florida, "For golfers who want to hit the ball farther; the Core not only helps with that, but will also keep you healthy enough to enjoy golf into your later years."
The key to accuracy in golf is lessons and practice! But the key to distance is strength and flexibility, and the MedX Core Spinal Fitness Program will quickly and easily improve these for you! It targets the muscles directly involved in the golf swing. This is why one of the country’s premier golf coaches, Butch Harmon, was the first to endorse the MedX Core Spinal Fitness Program! It will dramatically increase your strength in these specific muscles in a matter of weeks. If you increase your strength by even 20%, you will hit the ball substantially further, often 20 or 30 yards further. Tiger Woods knows this and this is why Tiger strength trains year round!
The MedX Super Stretch machine, which is an essential part of the MedX Spinal Core Program, will increase your back swing and follow through. As the years go by your golf stroke shortens, and unless we do something about it, we lose flexibility every year! The MedX Super Stretch uses specific measurable stretches that mimic the golf swing and increases flexibility. The longer your stroke, the further you will hit the ball! Why not improve your game in less than 20 minutes twice a week? Make sure to get a trainer’s help when getting started!
Good Health and Great Golf! Mike Arteaga
ALL SPORT POUGHKEEPSIE/ULSTER’S EAGLE OF THE MONTH
Congratulations and a big thank you go out to Phil Campala for being June’s Eagle of the month. Phil started working at All Sport in September of 2003. He works in the maintenance department in both clubs.
Recently the maintenance department has taken on more in-house projects and Phil is a large part of our success. His knowledge of the facilities and equipment in the two clubs, along with his great smile are a wonderful asset to All Sport. Thanks again Phil, for being a part of our team.

"THE CORE", the new fitness buzz word!
If you have been doing the MedX circuit, you have been doing the most advanced core training routine available.
In the last couple of years there have been innumerable articles written about the importance of "Core Training". The core refers to the muscles on the torso that attach to and move the spine and the pelvis, including the spinal erectors that extend the spine and neck, the abdominals that flex the spine and the obliques that rotate the spine. All these muscles are essential for back and neck support and are involved in almost every movement of the body.
Research indicates that strengthening the spinal erector muscles that run up the spine (the most important and strongest of the "core" muscles) is much more challenging than previously believed! They found that all the exercises and machines that claimed to strengthen these muscles simply didn’t work. The spinal erectors attach from one spinal vertebra bone to the next and provide the major support to the spine. The research found that unless the hamstring and gluteus muscles are excluded while doing any "back exercise" they will generally dominate the movement, and the critically important spinal erector group will NOT get the exercise it needs. In fact the spinal erectors will often weaken despite extensive attempts at exercise!
The invention of the patented MedX Lumbar Extension Machine uses an ingenious system of lower body supports to prevent the inclusion of the hamstring and gluteus in the exercise.
This original MedX Lumbar Extension machine is the sophisticated and expensive medical device that we use in our Healthy Back Program. It was designed primarily for people with chronic low back pain and requires a trainer’s assistance.
In the late 90’s MedX designed an exercise version that could be used without assistance. It is a simplified version, but is still very effective for back strengthening. The Exercise Lumbar machine combined with the Neck Machine, the Rotary Torso machine, the Abdominal machine and the MedX Stretch Super machine make up the MedX core circuit, the most effective and complete Core Fitness Program in the world!
We included the Lumbar machines and the Abdominal machines at the end of the circuit – these machines are available for everyone in the club to use since they are the most essential for spinal health. The Rotary Torso machine, the Neck machine and the Super Stretch machine should be included whenever time allows! (Anyone concerned about osteoporosis should be sure to regularly include the Neck Machine, which prevents the collapse of the upper spine commonly referred to as "dowagers hump".) Ideally, the MedX Core Fitness Machines should be part of your fitness routine to keep your back strong and limber before back problems develop! Make sure to get a trainer’s help when getting started!
The MedX company was the first to assemble the most comprehensive and effective Core program in the industry, and we have been using it ever since. The MedX Core Program is ideal for maintaining back health and also very helpful for enhancing athletic performance, particularly with golfers!
In the early 80’s, long before the core workouts became the "in thing", Arthur Jones the founder and then owner of the Nautilus Company, recognized the importance of strengthening the core muscles and introduced some of the first core machines. After selling the Nautilus Company in the mid 80’s he took the core concept a giant step further with the introduction of the MedX Lumbar extension machine. This machine was the culmination of millions of dollars in research, much of which was conducted at the University of Florida Medical School.

TIPS TO HELP EXERCISE FOR A LIFETIME!
This is a big one! Don’t take the summer off even if you are golfing or gardening. There are always rainy days and 95 degree days when you can get a workout in to keep from going backwards!
If you have trouble sticking with an exercise routine, or you just want something new, try one of the fantastic Group Power Classes or starting June 5th take our New BTS Group Step class! You will Love it!!
When you are too busy, keep the habit going with 15 minute workouts. It’s amazing how little work is necessary to keep from going backwards!
"If I can’t exercise 3 (4 or 5) days a week it’s not worth it!" This is absolutely wrong; even once a week is far better than nothing and will keep you from going backwards!
There is no such thing as staying the same! We are either improving or we are deteriorating! Pick one!
Remember: When you exercise, you are fighting a thousand diseases at once, unlike drugs that may help prevent one disease and cause other problems.

A FEW WARM WEATHER MISCONCEPTIONS
The most common misconception: all physical labor is good for you! If that were the case, most of those whose work life requires physical labor, such as construction workers, would retire fit and healthy. In reality, physical labor is destructive to the body and most who make their living doing physical work reach retirement with a list of health problems. The good news is that growing numbers of people are reaching retirement in fit condition and in good health! After 34 years of observation it’s clear that they are the ones who chose to participate in a regular year round exercise program. Most physical labor is destructive to the body! This is not to say that physical labor should be avoided. On the contrary, we should be as active as possible, but we need to incorporate a regular exercise program to protect us against the destructive aspects of physical labor! Misconception #2: golf is exercise! It isn’t. You’re not raising your heart rate to a point that creates cardiovascular benefit nor are you strengthening your muscles. Even Tiger Woods works out though the season because he knows it helps him play better! Misconception #3: sweating is connected to fat loss! Sweating has nothing to do with fat loss! Some people wear heavy sweat suits or even rubber suits to promote sweating. Sweating is the body’s way of cooling itself, and if you interfere with the sweat evaporating off the body by wearing heavy clothes, or even worse preventing evaporation by wearing a rubber suit, the risk of a heart attack or stroke is very high! This risk has no benefit since profuse sweating does absolutely nothing to expedite fat loss! Misconception #4: what is the use in exercising if I can’t do it three times a week? The truth is, when it comes to muscle strengthening, once a week can maintain muscle strength! The reality is, any time strengthening exercises aren’t being done, you are losing muscle, no matter how much cardio exercise you do! Once a week cardio is also much better than none at all! Misconception #5: we lose weight during the summer months! This has gone the way of the push lawnmower! Unfortunately most Americans gain weight year round despite the fact that we tend to be busier in the warmer months! We are still taking in more calories than we burn. Misconception #6: if I run or do a lot of walking, I don’t have to do strengthening exercise for my legs! Cardio exercise does not build strength, and our legs will continue to get weaker as we age no matter how much we run or walk! The research clearly indicates that the most important thing you can do for our health is regular exercise. Once you have established the habit, you should do all you can to avoid interruptions! Drop to once a week when things are tight, but don’t break the most important and beneficial habit you have! Mike Arteaga

THE NEW GROUP STEP CLASSES BEGIN IN EARLY JUNE! BE THERE FOR A FUN WORKOUT WITH NEW MUSIC!

I AM ALREADY VERY ACTIVE. HOW WILL THE MEDX HEALTHY BACK AND NECK PROGRAM BENEFIT ME?
The muscles of the spine are rarely exercised effectively because they are over-shadowed by the larger muscle groups. This is true even for elite athletes. The leg and hip muscles take over for the lumbar spine and the upper back and shoulder muscles take over for the cervical spine. In response, the muscles of the spine become weak and de-conditioned through years of inactivity. They then become unable to protect the spine even under the lightest of physical demands. To change this process, the muscles need to be strengthened through a specific resistance exercise program like the MedX Healthy Back and Neck Program. Stop by the MedX Healthy Back and Neck Program in the Poughkeepsie Center or call us for more information!

MAKE A SPLASH AS YOU GET STRONGER AND FIT WITH AQUA FITNESS. There is nothing more inviting than a swimming pool in the hot days of summer. Swimming is a great cardio workout option, but swimming laps isn’t the only way to boost fitness. Aquatic exercise comes in a variety of forms with classes ranging from Aqua Jam to Ai Chi (Tai Chi in the water). So take the plunge and reap the benefits. Aquatic exercise isn’t just a relief from the heat; it is a respite from the stress on joints caused by many other kinds of workouts, such as running or walking, and you won’t sacrifice on results. The viscosity and weight of the water provide an impact free way to intensify your workout for big benefits.

GLUCOSAMINE SULFATE CONFUSION?

Actually there is no confusion, according to Dr. Jason Theodosakis, author of The Arthritis Cure and assistant professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, “There are over 35 human clinical studies with glucosamine and/or chondroitin worldwide. The supplements have been so well studied and accepted that one or both are actually over-the-counter or prescription drugs in over 40 countries. Indeed, many government health plans subsidize or reimburse the costs of glucosamine and chondroitin for their citizens. The safety data on these treatments is meticulously tracked, and guess what? Not a single death has ever been attributed to glucosamine or chondroitin – ever.”

As it turns out the media medical writers who pen the headlines often take great liberty in interpreting the studies or possibly don’t entirely read the study they write about. The recent study showed that those with moderate to severe pain benefited most from the glucosamine chondroitin supplement. It makes you wonder if it is negligence on their part or they have somehow been influenced by the pharmaceutical industry that clearly sees the supplements replacing about two billion dollars a year in drug sales.

According to Dr. Theodosakis, “If one were cynical enough to want to damage the popularity of a product, they could design a study that would appear to be of sound quality, but would lead to a negative conclusion. Pfizer may have done this with the depression treatment St. John’s Wort (supplement) versus Zoloft (drug). Researchers chose the wrong group to study, moderate to severe depression, even though St. John’s Wort is supposed to be used in milder cases. When the results proclaimed St. John’s Wort is no better than placebo, few mentioned that the prescription drug Zoloft also failed to work.”

Dr Theodosakis goes on to say: “The European Union recognizes glucosamine and chondroitin as having the highest level of evidence (1A category) and highest recommendation (A) of all treatments for osteoarthritis. Evidence for COX-2 drugs like Celebrex are listed as a step below (1B evidence category)”
The domestic arrogance of the U.S. in failing to embrace these completely non-toxic arthritis treatments has lead to the unnecessary deaths of over 100,000 people as victims of arthritis, clamoring for pain relief, who suffered the effects of liver failure from acetaminophen, or worse: kidney and liver damage, hypertension, bleeding ulcers, strokes and heart attacks from the anti-inflammatory drugs, including the newer COX-2inhibitors.”
“If you think the
US pharmaceutical companies haven’t noticed, you’re wrong. Several pharmaceutical companies have marketed and sold glucosamine and chondroitin products and they have been pushing to get these supplements converted to drug status in other countries. In Scandinavia, they were successful. Now they can make real money selling products they know are superior to their anti-inflammatory drugs from a risk/benefit and cost standpoint. With higher infrastructure costs, pharmaceutical companies' glucosamine/chondroitin products have not been able to compete against smaller and more nimble supplement manufacturers.”

Based on my review of the scientific studies, glucosamine sulfate, calcium and a good high potency multiple vitamin are the only supplements that we at All Sport can clearly endorse. Glucosamine sulfate is sold alone or in combination with chondroitin sulfate. Glucosamine and chondroitin are both natural substances that have no known side effects and can be purchased at any health food store, grocery store or drug store. There is some controversy as to whether the chondroitin is helpful, but neither have any known side effects.

According to an article in Physician and Sports Medicine Magazine, “Glucosamine and Chondroitin occur naturally in cartilage. In vitro (occurring in laboratory tests) glucosamine has been found to stimulate cartilage growth, and oral glucosamine has been shown in animal studies to decrease inflammation and arthritis symptoms.”

As with taking calcium supplements for the prevention of osteoporosis, the body will only use the supplements if there is a need for them. Without exercise the body perceives that there is no need to utilize these nutrients to strengthen the effected area, and it simply passes the calcium, or in this case, the glucosamine.

Glucosamine sulfate has helped me and many others to reduce joint pain. It doesn’t work for everyone, but it is certainly worth trying particularly when considering the other medical alternatives. It should be taken regularly for at least three months before deciding whether it is helpful.

SOMETIMES I’M ELATED AND SOMETIMES IT BREAKS MY HEART!

Over the last 33 years I have been blessed to observe first hand the effects of regular exercise on a huge population. Many have realized the necessity and have stuck with regular exercise for decades, despite life’s many interruptions and many, unfortunately have not.

I regularly run into past members who have changed dramatically for the worse because of inactivity. Inactivity creates what we call the “aging process”! The scientific fact is, if we aren’t exercising, we are deteriorating! Muscle disappears, fat accumulates and the body changes shape dramatically. The back begins to hunch, the joints begin to ache, and even walking starts to be painful. Often, I have to look twice to recognize them because even their faces have filled out. This breaks my heart because most of this is completely within our control!
