This month we will kick-off another new and exciting Body Training Systems class, Group Groove! It's a danced based program with fantastic music and choreography that incorporates everything from Urban to disco dance steps and is getting rave reviews in clubs across the country! I decided to schedule my annual physical with Dr. Henry Lodge, the co-author of the best selling book "Younger Next Year"! This afforded me the opportunity to talk with Dr. Lodge (he said just call me Harry) about some of the latest research on exercise and health! He spoke about how exercise doesn't receive the emphasis it should get. This is due to the fact that most research is based on exercise self reporting and self reporting has proven to be VERY inaccurate! Harry said that research based on actual physical testing clearly shows that the two most important factors for our health are mental attitude and exercise! In fact "an overweight smoker, who exercises, will live longer and have better health than a thin, non-smoker, who doesn't exercise"!
He also stressed the importance of doing cardiovascular exercise plus strengthening exercise, to maintain joint health, particularly if you have osteoarthritis. He said"I see patients all the time who have been recommended for knee replacement and I send them to do leg extension and leg curl exercises and 60% of the time I never see them again!"
